The Pat Whitley Restaurant Show

Sunday: 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM

RADIO DEBUT -- In 1976, on a hot day --right before the Fourth of July, a young radio personality was live on the air trying to talk politics. Trying everything he
knew to get calls, he was faced with the worst possible scenario - NO CALLS. In an attempt to rescue himself from three hours of open lines, he made on bold statement,* “Let’s talk about restaurants!” This was the beginning (quite by accident) of one of the most successful broadcasting concepts on American Radio. The first caller spoke of a restaurant nearing bankruptcy! This restaurant served Fried Ice Cream and Szechuan food (both items new to the Boston area). As a result of that one call the restaurant began to get (as they say in the restaurant industry) a run. This restaurant,** in the early 1980’s, became one of the largest Chinese restaurant chains in New England. It was the Pat Whitley Restaurant Show that pulled them away from bankruptcy. Incidentally, Weylu’s, the first restaurant recommended on the show, became the show’s first advertiser.

THE POWER OF PAT -- Today, the Pat Whitley Restaurant Show has become a “Sunday Morning Ritual” in New England, right up there with reading the Sunday paper and going out for Sunday Brunch. Over the past two decades the show has been perfected to a fine art... boasting tens of thousands of listeners! And now, in the age of the World Wide Web, the program is broadcast live over the Internet. Quite a large step from a program with such a humble beginning. Pat’s legions of loyal fans is another attribute to the success of the program, from young children to senior citizens, households through New England know and listen to Pat Whitley on Sunday morning.* Over 15,000* hits daily to his web site.

LASTING TRADITION -- Pat Whitley has had a long and illustrious career in New England and the national media spotlight. In addition to owning and presiding over Whit’s Media since 1986, he has also co-hosted one of Boston’s top rated morning shows, Clapprood & Whitley, on WRKO and WHDH. In addition to WRKO in Boston, his admirable radio career included his own programs on WBZ, WHDH, WMEX/WITS and was a substitute host for the Larry King Show on the Mutual Radio Network. In the 1970’s Pat was program director of WNBC in New York. During that time he was named the “National Program Director of the Year” and was individually responsible for hiring national radio personalities Dom Imus and Wolfman Jack. When his radio career began in the late 1950’s, Pat worked at a variety of stations, ranging from WCAP in Lowell, MA where he was a staff announcer, to WWDC in Washington, DC where he directed programming. Pat Whitley’s experience in radio is exceptional, and justifies his extraordinary success as one of the most enduring radio personalities in the country.
