Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. August 17 2017. Is wal mart's second quarter earnings release date and with that's. We bring in the Wal-Mart expert John Rooney here in studio with me Chuck Todd Tucker still behind the board as always. You know like my two favorite holiday is Christmas is definitely number one Wal-Mart report today. Would be number two what we see from wal mart's health Wal-Mart doing John what they are the world's biggest retailer by far the biggest the United States they came with earnings today shocked that were inline or better. The problem is anticipation was were really robust and it is all listings we expect the unexpected data great first quarter this year and been very good first quarter data very it's a second quarter. They beat on and on earnings at dollar rate vs the box seven but again that's pretty much in line. Revenues a little bit better 123. Billion dollars of sales they do in one quarter in one quarter but just there are many many times larger than anybody else in the industry. Same store sales again very good up one point seven but that's what was expected so. They came in as expected but they're expected to really well. And you don't know momentum market like this people think because there's good news maybe it's going to be even more good news. And part of part of I think the the response here were wal mart's down almost 2% in trading so far. Is that it's been a very good quarter earnings you've had a lot of companies that have come in better than expected that's kinda kept the market where it is. And so few or company that simply meets expectations. I think that's why you being punished here. Absolutely on top of that if you have a stock it's already done very well relative to the market and twits skiers and it's set up for decline. We're gonna get to cases a day in the future here of companies that have been doing poorly. That when they come through the big number in of their stock has been weak the stock just loves it but here's Wal-Mart is up 11% over last year. Chalk while retailers are down 15%. That's massive outperformance. In a sector people are concerned about so what happens this. When when you're that loved. In a sector that's that challenged if you don't blow estimates the way people find a reason to sell on what we're seeing from Wal-Mart on online sales. Robust and even better than expected how much of that total sales are on line at this point very small just it's still small percentage is a couple ocean and we got it. Part of that is they're so big and store you talk about a company that sells 500 billion dollars worth of goods a year yet I mean if they're they're online sales are just a couple of points of overall sales bond within that context as Wall Street's looking at Coca. Their their online sales were up 63%. Last quarter. After a 27%. Gain the quarter before that so good with the jet dot com acquisition and the rubble little small on the puck acquisitions. And the fact they've really improved their website. There's a lot of upside there in the other thing is Wal-Mart does have a pricing advantage. Over Amazon on a lot of products and people start discovered that you start to see a lot of prime members. Doing less than three quarters of their dying on Amazon. And their buying some essentials on Wal-Mart because Wal-Mart now offers with no membership. Twenty and it's 35 dollar minimum purchase to bishop. John what deep Wal-Mart. I I I worked in the midwest for number you'd ups and it struck me as being a guy from Boston's like. What the second like every other story here's a Wal-Mart and like 80% of the retail space is Wal-Mart in just culturally. They're such a significant player in the midwest and south. It struck me that like. When I moved back here 1015 years ago. The wal mart's how to people in the midwest view Wal-Mart at this point is I know initially there was a lot of consternation that they were putting out of business these mom and pop retailers the old general stores that used to see. As that. Past at this point. I think nationally there's still. Some kickback people are concerned about the wages. When they look up companies like Costco and look at other companies that are competing with them. They saw the Wal-Mart did not pay their employees as well did not have the benefit packages. And of course Amazon is taking care of the whole issue of domination because Wal-Mart is no longer considered a dominant company. But you know the president chairman Doug MacMillan. He took a lot of heat for spending a lot of money. On bowl upgrading the online presence. But even more importantly giving everybody a lot more money they're spending hundreds of millions of dollars to reward their employees. And chuck that's really paying off in. A better in sports periods. Better inventory management. They're getting higher customer service of ratings and a lot of people frankly who were sent to see. People not being paid them much yeah now have a better feeling about going and spending money the place that's. Giving their people a better deal. Let's look at another day another competitor to Wal-Mart and that's target. I know they reported as well what what are we seeing from them these days I know. They have struggled in all the law. Throughout the course of and of 2016 in the first quarter of 2017 is a little bit of a bounce back now. I think there's no doubt about that it in this is a classic example of expectations vs realizations. And we talked a Wal-Mart stock being up a lot setup for decline. One point 7% same store sales okay. One point 3% same store sales at target is greeted with a wild standing ovation up because. Their shares are down 23%. This year a lot of bad things have happened to target they've missed the target targets no pun intended. And the same store sales were negative will now they're slightly positive now they're cleaning up the story that it literally in their store. And they're getting much better than expected traffic Ian online sales so. And they also had that bathroom issue. Which I don't. I think the margin. For them. Whether there were a lot of people who said look I'm just not going to shop at Wal-Mart and were part tar carruthers our. And that's kind of in the rearview mirror for them so they you know that's making for easier comparisons. Problem has been I think they've lacked an identity. When target has done well is when they got the merchandise mix right and they got the clothing right. And they've never been able to compete price wise with Wal-Mart they simply don't have the scale they're doing a lot of things right now one of things that does that lower prices. They increased their sales. And so you know the margins are are are are tough. But it's very far from the compete price question they've got to get that product mix right let's dig a little bit to view of the the talk about the the bathroom issue at tartan okay. How hard do you think it is to run a business in today's political climate trying to thread the needle. So that you'd do not alienate either people on the conservative side or on the liberals and things I think there's sometimes we just simply can't win. You you've got to make a decision. You know why are we looking I guess here's my question why are we looking to businesses. To make these decisions for us instead of our political institutions and our people. That's a great question. You know I would think that the law should be the law. And company should follow the law which we've kind of had some failings on that side of things it seems like it in the cause of that. Businesses are having to pick up the slacker trying to pick up so. No question about that and and to think the downside. On either political risk. I mean you can yep risk alienating conserve your way you alienate people know there's no matter what you end on. A good example of that is Starbucks. Get rich. You know they've taken some stands which they thought was societal least Smart to do they base that we wanna be at the neighbor. And we want to speak out on issues that we think are important and when they did that they alienated. Large percent of the customers. So I mean I I think it's pretty Smart for companies that try to stay out of the political arena. Leave that up to politicians in the people to sell applause I just I find interesting that we we are looking to our businesses for almost moral guidance at this point. Instead of saying look you want we just make decisions on our own and then not put that burden on business to do so how much of that as of millennial phenomenon. Who who won heels don't vote so it's not our fault but you wanna feel on the hunting a heck you wanna feel good about what you buy. And the problem is this is brands are saying that taking aside the civic forget the people would go here. If we can associate. A feel good scenario. With 49% of the population. There's a more low there's a likely chance that that millennial person will connect with our brand they're using it almost is advertising they are no question about it. There have been a number of companies where instead of running a normal advertising budget what they do is they might donate 5% of their profits to charity or something like that and that's how they advertise effectively. They say look this this is how were were were donating this money to charity. And people jump on board with them because of that. And I think there was some of these issues. Companies have unfortunately made the decision to say look we don't wanna run ads so instead we're just gonna take a stand on something and use that in place of advertise. And I'll tell you that the companies are making a big mistake in my opinion when they start to take political sides. And they say a way to embrace liberals away to embrace conservatives prefer to take the stand because what you're doing when you do that. Is your saying goodbye to a large chunk of your people why not just simply say for every dollar resell we're gonna get five cents the Jimmy Fund. We're gonna get five cents to your name some non political. Good feeling excellent cause that can make everybody feel. Well it in some things also today they're somewhat hypocritical in some cases you have. You look at apple and they you know they've made all these cases in the US what does it look we wanna push for higher minimum wage to a push for this and that and we wanna push for using new green energy in this and that. They've got factories over China that are powered by coal that are using effectively slave labor and you sit there and you're going to the well what are you doing here he had so it's it's hard when companies try to get involved in these situations because oftentimes. I find there in over their heads. Yeah and their their they're realizing that that they alienated a lot of people an attempt to turn solidifies certain basement. The bottom line is retail sales overall chuck are looking pretty good and unlike continues to grow as a percentage of retails well. Which is great for the consumer rapidly not particularly great for the bottom one of the companies and what it's a ship what Wal-Mart. The reason why the stock is down 3% and in addition to selling good news in the fact that wasn't great great great news. Is that their margins were pressured. On all the money they've had to spend to beef up e-commerce. On the money they've knocked it on the on the margins they've had to eat. By cutting prices to be competitive all this stuff by the way is 100%. Great news for the consumer. This brings us or no question. For the day if you head over to financial exchange showed dot com you can participate so head over their right now again its financial exchange showed dot com. And our question is what percentage of online shopping. Percent of shopping you typically do on line is close to 0%. 50%. Or a 100% go to financial exchange so right now financial exchange showed dot com and he can vote and let us know. How much shopping. Did you online verses in stores. John Kelly took over as Donald Trump's chief of staff. Less than three weeks. It's hard to believe it's only been seventeen days since he took over. And joining us now to talk about some of the changes that he's putting in place is Mike Bender from the Wall Street Journal Mike thank you for coming all of this today. It Mike the title of the article is Kelly's rules for Trump's west wing stop bickering get in early and make an appointment. Sounds like he's trying to lay down a little bit of a hard line here. You he is trying to put a bit more to learn control. On the back of the way out west wing. He shut down shut the doors going in you'll office. Area right outside. The Oval Office was sort of are gathering point or agent. Who had a couple. Stand around air and hoping that the president I'll give weight and and that's read that your corporate president would kind of wanna gossip about. What's going on in the world are the White House and and then the staffer could make a pitch or. Whatever planned double proposals if they were trying to push into the administration. Until it shut that down. Also. Stopped people on. Hang around attacked his own office now staffers that we see in. Steve Stanton orchard crushing need to wait in the lobby. Of the west wing where we're all visitors to like actually he. Before their appointment. Even you can terms for an outside advisors and company. I'm very sort of social person wants to hear a lot of opinions. The folks who have been calling them regularly and president. Stopping him now also have to reform go to John Kelly put in the written request to speak to the president. Out of it doesn't mean it doesn't sound like Kelly. The taco is it is. Stopping in the year the topic if you make the request you know trump couldn't hear roster in this haven't talked to them that it's. Those conversations are happening now that that's a little bit more formality to. The areas where I know there has been. Some criticism of Donald Trump even from an Republicans has been on his use of Twitter. There was a Fox News poll that was out. In late June showing that only 21% of Republicans approved of the use of his Twitter account the way that he was using it. How much is John Kelly trying to change how old Donald Trump is communicating with the public. Yet it's amazingly everyone's ever hit the president what he's. I don't know what it should be doing that Italy is. Except the president. That we really heard that. It's more formal process. I can't put in place. That it took to speak with them also part of the group. Not. You know that answers substantial that there had been some tweet that has not been posted the last few weeks. Because that. More critical that more formal process and it a little bit longer you know you're an eight month president put some order to go to process as well. And it slowed down them. Put down a little bit. And then and compete I haven't gotten into catastrophe and we. He this morning. You know the there's there's there's no shortage of news from the president's trophy in the anymore just this morning calling me an actor. There supporting their Republican primary pitting Republican senator from Arizona Catholics. Yeah all the endorsed just weeks primary opponent Arizona this morning. And also doubled down. And position. Not equating Robert. Two to George Washington and mr. Parsons and you know economies statues. WB had an orchard and next you know or Washington under construction. Loans slaves and and also beat. Become victims who pregnancies and more of our political correctness and sort of social movement. Time now for Wall Street watch a look at the market's performance so far today but I still Berrian jug right here on the financial exchange radio network. Mike Armstrong is here with a Wall Street watch we continue to plow through earnings season looking at a few more companies here Mike thanks for joining us. When Jack Mike let's start off with Cisco what do we see. Yasser recognition system been a pretty consistent. Rough few years. Revenue out be down 4% year over year it's now declined on annualized basis for seven consecutive quarters. They're earnings came in about in line. And revenues slightly beat Specter fact of the matter is this seems to be accompanied an eight bit of a cyclical decline in the stock is off nearly 4% dollar toward force sense three point 83%. Juncture you remember when Cisco was on track to be the first trillion dollar company back in the late nineties. The mighty have fallen here Mike let's talk a little bit about Wal-Mart an L brand to more retailers reporting earlier today. Yet as I mentioned earlier this week it's really good week for retail. Wal-Mart had a quarterly profit dollar rate per share basically in line investment to penny above. They're revenue beat forecasts as well and comp sales were up one point 8% which is really in line with apps forecast. There e-commerce actually grew by 63% but as has been the case this this reminds me of the home Depot's story here. Pretty solid quarter from Wal-Mart but I doubt stocks down a dollar sixty to 2% on the news. Very good Mike thank you for the time we'll catch up with the tomorrow. It Mike Armstrong with Wall Street watch we did have a winner on our trivia question the question was in what year did the first target store opened. The it was 1962 was actually in Roseville Minnesota job who the right. Answer Matt from Weymouth got that end up to be getting two passes to the dealt technologies championship taking place Labor Day weekend. At the TPC Boston in Norton Massachusetts the passes include. Ground access and entry to the harbor one champions club. Trivia today brought to by the Armstrong advisory group with plenty of speculation stool in the news regarding a market correction now's a great time for review of your portfolio. Call our office today at 803934001. And set up your free no obligation consultation that's 803934001. Talk a little Amazon here Donald Trump tweeting a couple days back. That quote Amazon is doing great damage to tax paying retailers towns cities and states throughout the Esther B throughout the US are being hurt. Many jobs being lost. There's something to this and Amazon on the products that they sell directly. They do pay tax but on any of their marketplace items that sold through third party retailers on their platform they are not put. And sales tax. And his point about Amazon doing great damage to retailers I think is something that is going to be an issue. The next couple years and on a couple of fronts. Look no one of the ones opposed to someone playing a game and winning that's the way our system work yes. But in addition to this whole tax issue there's the other issue of if you look at Amazon they've got their hands and everything. They are if you look at where they'd make profit. They're really a web services companies all on the server hosting pretty much they make a lot of money doing and Holland billions the argument. Against Amazon is what you have here is. A profitable web services company. That's using its proceeds to fund a nonprofit. Retail company that's exhibiting predatory pricing for the for whatever purpose world domination or take over the industry. There's no question it's harmed main street there's no question it result in malls being shut down. The question is to what extent is it fair in I think Donald Trump has raised an issue that needs to be discussed on multiple fronts. So here's here's a question for Ayman Amazon's Gerald okay. I do believe that Amazon. Hasn't anticompetitive practices in place in particular some of the things they do with how they regulate their their their marketplace. Vendors some of the things they require now. It is incredibly anti competitive what they're doing. I would also make the argument. The Wal-Mart is doing some GeMS that are relatively anti competitive as well some of the things they've done recently where someone if they vendor is hosting their website on a WS on Amazon's servers and Wal-Mart saying we want to business rush like if if you have market power to do that. It's pretty clear that there's some anti trust concerns so what I would like to see. And what I think will be great for consumers is a renewed anti trust pushed against some of these big companies. That that the challenge here it's not your traditional anti trust no because not physically look at anti trust Amazon doesn't have yet is always a market. Or credit they're. They're not big in the broad scheme of retail guy but they force everyone else to would which is highly unusual you know what other industry see that in where tell columns. Think what T-Mobile has done over the last decade now. With pricing where where T-Mobile for the longest time had 1520%. Of the US market. And they were able to dictate pricing from Verizon and AT&T. Amazon's doing the same thing now and here's the other challenge. You from a particular side and I agree with the other side of that from from. Regulatory perspective it is. Amazon has a tiny percent of their retail business they're nowhere near monopoly that they're barely. Or in terms of overall sales though there fractions I think there's still in terms of actual retail sales been like 15% the size of Wal-Mart. And I think they have like 2% of the total return guys so they're not a monopoly. And the other issue is. You need to demonstrate that there's harm to the consumer. How is harmful to the consumer. If you have someone willing to sell below cost to give the consumer better deal well in this so so it's very hard to pursue anti trust in that's one of those things that you look at you say. So companies willing to lose money what do we do it's not like they're reaping monopoly profits the not so that is editorial that it is. But that's that's my point I I think there's predatory pricing. But then here's the flip side that I just saw an article that's that cost goes in store prices are 25% lower than Amazon the cost goes online prices are 19% lower than Amazon. And I've seen other articles it's at Wal-Mart prices across the board are lower than it was until. It's it's very hard argument to me although I kind of agree with it if it's it's almost a situation where. The laws that are on the books you go back to all of these these laws that written in 1911 and I think with the Sherman act I think was 1911 and if you go through you know all these. They're not built for these kinds of companies totally they're not built for the unit that they that they don't work. In this environment necessarily. And I think you may need to see a little bit of a refreshing in a little bit of change and no I think I think it's a different paradigm and when I hear a conservatives' approach to dealing with us liberals approach to the stealing with a separate you know web. I think they missed the boat I think the world has changed and the challenges here from regulatory perspective our our unique. Absolutely but talk a little bit about what we saw yesterday afternoon. Both of Donald Trump's business council's disbanding. The may be a manufacturing one as well as the leadership and strategy. Council both disbanding here. What what does this mean in terms of how the business community is supporting or not supporting the president at this point. You know the optics year obviously Patton you have a Republican president who's part of his base. He's a pro business Republican who's the president no doubt about it and you know in a lot of ways of doing a lot of on the regulatory side in terms deregulation and so. Or he's saying look I'm with you on trying to give you some regulatory relief on Wiki when tried to lower your corporate tax by half or more. Made very strong push very strong statements that and yet. They the people on these councils are dropping like flies in and you know his buddy Steve Schwartzman of Blackstone would get as a two on supporter. And supports the troop agenda you know he delivered the news that Donald Trump that look everybody's leaving. It's a trumpets we fired people before the chance to quit the optics are bad but at the CI I accountable that. If the CEOs believe that the trumped policy is beneficial to them. I think there is hope here that this the situation can be salvaged. Because there's an ideological connection here. Where do you see this going in terms of business leaders going forward and they go direct congress to say well we wanna work with congress on tax I mean you can't do an end around there. No and I don't I don't they're between a rock and a hard place and and to some extent I mean a lot of these people they barely had meetings. It's not right they had any great import. I think that they were showing support it's just the appear exactly and so. Yeah they're now no longer part of this council but I don't even see the reason why the beanie for around because when it comes down to. A tax package is gonna require that's gonna lower their taxes from 35% to either fifteen or twenty. They're going to be on board. Regardless of what they do right now they're gonna be supportive of that you think there's not political capital out there to get tax reform done that's the bigger question and that has nothing to do necessarily with the CEOs that has to do. With your ability of Republicans and specifically their leader. The president the United States to convince. Congress and that. Seek the with corporate taxes it is it's something that requires leadership and education. I don't talk to people amazed used to you know the answer or problems lower the corporate tax to 15%. You know when he gets that no one is excited about that when Europe's point of them if you look at the corporate tax to fifteen to 20%. You can create more jobs and get a free up more money for hiring. You gonna do a lot of things to improve American competitiveness. Which will result in. Increased wealth in an increase just it requires education and the thing you have to explain to people corp taxes don't really bring in a lot of revenue anyways it makes simply correct in 9% of overall receipts by the federal government 84%. He's brought in for me their payroll taxes. Or from income taxes. And the little money that's brought him. Is brought in primarily by small businesses that are working really hard to GE isn't paying corporate income tax. The average large companies paying 2523%. Your big companies and are not paying it's your small ones that get stuck with the verdict is they can't offshore profits and things like that the big companies have already figured out ways around. So it's it's the mom and pop. That need relief and by the way it's the moment pop who hire. The hiring in this country historically. Has been disproportionately. Small businesses large companies. Large in the times large companies don't cut. Little higher but net net. They just don't cut. Midsize companies hire a little bit small companies hire a lot that's the way our economy works those of the businesses that would be helped by lower tax. You know the one exception is that and is that what they want they just keep higher. But the wrong warehouses that they all crashed out like fifty dollars an hour and many get up every morning is AG a real little focus. If you wanna be a robot baby sitter. The opportunities around. Is that that's our issue is that all of our futures robot babysitters watched I don't feel like that's good the way the world is going at this point hugged the robot's speed the robots. This move reluctantly and wanna hog. No acute. I'm out I'm trying to hoping for the future jobs. Well today 844. Regarding municipal bonds a lot of you've heard about municipal bonds but you may not understand. Where they could fit into your investment portfolio chuck I wanted to talk about the different types of municipal bonds because I think that's a good starting base for this conversation. Yeah and in general there are two major types of municipal bonds there what we called general obligation bonds GOs and then we also have revenue bonds general obligation bonds tend to be a little bit more stable is they're not dependent on any one type of revenue coming from a state or city or rather their backed by what we call the full faith and credit of that municipality. All right so are there are ones that are more preferable to others aren't like you one would what would you consider one type of municipal bond. To be safer than another general obligation bonds tend to be because they can pull revenues from any stream coming in in order to pay. Those bonds revenue bonds on the other hands are typically coming from one source and airports revenue sports teams revenue something like that. And because of that they tend to be a little bit more unstable but he can also get higher yields on revenue bonds that's the trade off the face. Ari folks there's a lot that goes into the process. Burial Armstrong is how today. Take a little bit of the day off a little bit of a much needed rest in his plays John Mooney is joining me checks on him talkers over as well. And look at the market today John. Little bit of instability here not a huge move in any direction but the Dow is off about a hundred points right now NASDAQ kind of leading the way down. Yeah it's it's been a choppy market but it doesn't was very nervous to start out with was down a well over a hundred points earlier today. The buying stepped in your body says well maybe this is the big political risk that's gonna finally do in the market in every time they said that they've been rock flow. You know I don't know what they're right about that yet there's attesting to say we'll. CEOs are all leaving. This is a pro business president. You know you would think Debbie bad news but I think there's some optics going on here in an and other mitigating circumstances are as they're concerned in terms that the parts of the market that have been struggling the last couple weeks. But a lot of your typical market leaders tech finance of give kinda taken a little bit. Does that kind of behavior concern you at all. It concerns me but if I'm concerned about a bubble let me give you some evidence here chuck that says. There's probably inaudible Oca 40%. Of the stocks in the S&P 509 to find the stock market as the S&P 500 that's most of the capitalization. A theatre company 40%. Of the stocks in the S&P. Right now. 20%. Are in and out right bear market. There are definitely things stocks FaceBook Amazon Netflix Google and we'll throw into that Tesla. The other through the roof no question about that if you look at the general market. Outside of a handful of large very successful companies. It's not that big super doesn't. Could you argue that makes you nervous is this if those kinds of companies start struggling for whatever reason. There's no there's no market support there's an argument but at the same time too if your concern is that were in a ball that prices are irrationally exuberant. I would argue that that is true. With a relatively small number of very popular issues yeah but it's not through the general market. That's fair. That's fair and and also what were happening what's happening here is. We're seeing a justifiably increase in prices based on earnings which is basically the most important report garden. Earnings are up 10% in the second quarter they were up 14%. In the first quarter. If there's a troubling concern here chuck it's that the quarter were in is mostly about 5%. Earnings growth seems to be decelerating here. Seems to be but we expect its second quarter rural exacting you know 6% were coming around ten Sunni area it's there and I say. Okay may be especially and they will jump ahead of the story now. Dollar's weakening. The dollar has weakened this years ago if you huge factor maybe be in fact I've argued. To bury the number one reason for the bull market we have right now is the dollar being weak. And the average stock that has 50% or more exposure to non US business. Is up 14%. This year the average stock that doesn't have exposure to the rest of the world is coupled. And the dollar is if you look at it in comparison to world currencies has fallen about 10% since the start of the year it is significant significant change what does that do. What is a weaker dollar do well makes US manufacturing more competitive okay makes US exporting more competitive. It makes the American worker cheaper higher on a world basis so it's something that. Oh allows companies to go out and say okay we can hire US workers say number dollars but it's cheaper for us to do so when world Munich compared to hiring someone. In China compared hiring someone in Mexico compared hiring someone in India you it makes the US worker more competitive and it's. It largely seems like it's gone on report. There hasn't been a lot of talk about I agree and I think as the number one issue going on right now and the other issue that's going on right now which is totally under reported. Is all this talk about what's going on Washington pro and con. The biggest story this week on the market is one that I've even seen people report on. The biggest story with that Japan's GDP. Grew grew 4%. Now on Monday morning or reset all of North Korea has backed off the market's going higher because we want guess what. I happen to be in the geek I am I was watching Bloomberg Sunday night. And I was watching the futures. And I said you know it's good news about North Korea backing down. The Dow was up about twenty points in the Japan news came through Japan news came up in the Dow was up 100 points. Reese that's a big deal is there's a synchronized global recovery going on right now Asia is booming Europe is doing. Better a lot better the read be emerging markets are doing really well. This is a a tide lifts all boats and it's too I think this it's dry you the United States along with a in the US has been the one dragging the rest of the world boy it. And here's a question about the US that's where it was going to go next to. I've been of the opinion that there are some signs of weakness in the US you take a look at auto sales take a look at the savings rate he tickled to borrowing. None of it met its shows a very good pictures that the two parts of the US economy that seem to be good top line higher growth we're still not seeing good wage the top line hiring is still good no object and housing is being. Those the two where is that kind of keeping us afloat the rest is kind of this muddy picture race say. It doesn't look that great. But the world economy does appear to be a lot stronger than it did you. Just six months ago we didn't see it's it's off its back I think that's the thing it went up being cynical girl we say. The fact that Europe is no longer in crisis. Is big news. The fact that Japan which has been a no growth economy for as long as I've been alive. Is growing 4%. These people be buying our goods to be buying their goods it's it's it's all good news when you have global growth. It is it is so obviously you know you are seeing a little bit of a question mark in the US and a couple of areas. But you are seeing some better grow global growth and hopefully takes the burden off the US to be done and yet it is the the US has largely here at the world on its back for the last four years of this. No question and so. You know ideally look if you get a little bit tax reform that comes through Indian he gets something that can spur of the US economy. You might have things clicking pretty well I think our economy's doing better than reported you know even you know you mentioned will be no auto zone two and a great. Actually doing really good they're really their. If there at a seventeen million unit. We would die for seventy million unit basis ought to scare me a little bit right now because it's off the peak but it's off of people very illegal lending out a lot of scares me to the debt defaults that are picking up scare me the fact that you're seeing so many people trying to trading cards and roll over loans. Like there are some signs that. Not saying that it's bad today but there are signs that we're doing is sustainable. There are some early warning signals I don't agree there is no question about that it's not something that's bad today but it's something that two years now in a decent they're saying. It started in seventy yeah. I hear you talking about that trend is clearly here that we saw that led to the crisis in 2008. What I will say though defense of the consumer is. The consumers' individual balance sheet is demonstrably. Better than it's been at any time in the last I'm wondering about that savings rate. Down three point 8%. Part of it is because there if there. They've gotten more they've got more cash to begin with and then I'm nervous John. I'm nervous. Just saying I mean look there's there's there's reason to worry but I tale overall. I think we're pretty future. So being in pretty good shape as well they are boosting production of their duck boots. Up to 750000. Pairs this year Baylor made a 100000 a decade ago. Yet this huge growth this boost. Is really giving a boost to hiring here they're adding a bunch of people. They're building us a 106000. Square foot facility that's gonna double the production space. In Lewiston. There we're talking about a lot of good jobs a hundred additional production workers at two locations that the road to make a million of these boots next year yeah 750000. This year ending grow another 33%. Up to a million pairs of boots. Oh dear MLB team has a great brand and the great level but LOB news they get people pay up for because that's quality and it's the best in the thing to remember if they're making a pair to sell a million pairs they're gonna make two million boots act like. How long it. They're trying to make two million from two year. Boats and that's a lot of boots. A lot of fruits. Howard that many people want to buy these things are great boots but I'm sit around going they how they wrapped up this quickly like. Apparently they've become like a passion that yes a lot of cities absolutely past two years these that all play eaten in high demand he do you know again to to get back to chops thinking though are are we get he boot. Because I mean here here's an example of my. It. BO MET this is the operative letter bit but after they make 5400. Boots today. And they're doing that on top of that there's a giant boom outside the main stored Freeport. And shock if we're concerned about Pete Boone. There were two bull mobiles rolling around North America there's even a boot mobile in Japan now that it's not the sign he boo. I don't know what is. It's no where you hit peak booed is where you get in the taxi driver asked you forget meters boot to sell is looking to buy. That it's it bit my favorite picture from a couple years ago in China was there was it was a guy you can you can Google I forget exactly where was. There's and one of the major Chinese cities. And there's a guy sitting there on the side of the street you sell bananas and he's got two computers in front of him with stock markets this week if it was right before the Chinese market crashed 2015. And you say they understand. That's where you know went crazy it was the same as when taxi drivers are giving me stock tips in 1999 that is where you knew it was crazy there's like an Asian version of Joseph Kennedy making them are calling exact I'd seen the top and it is this. Pick boot. I don't know but if it we got we got Abu mobiles we've got a giant boot I don't I don't know for a people who pitted they're good boots I liken. I don't know impairment of Barton a couple that great so you're not convenient archivist of my peak in theory. I'm still buyer potential I haven't bought a pair yet so I don't know I don't know about peak booed at this point is not ready to go that is. Proof that they're failing breakdown and you that you get another pair for free if you bring that pair the old pair badly slowness of they have the best return policy that like any company in the country fact I think it was sixty minutes is to destroy down. If they're talking about big people bring stuff back from like many years ago. Deck and they don't question kinda think of it when my buddies had a pair slippers splitter on any brought an old pair and they just him in new. For free and that I like to swear in terror and end CBS sent CBS saying you know how can you afford to do that makes it you know what. We trust our customer in our customer trust us. And this important this policy has worked for many many decades. Bit they're great boots may right up there in Maine in Lewiston Maine with a big new facilities and put number eighty it's not. Let's take a break when we come back we're going to be talking about summer youth unemployment what kids do when these days. Looking for a home equity line of credit leader bank is now offering a fixed annual percentage rate of two point 99% for the first six months. Then prime for the life of the line. No closing cost as well also take advantage of this great deal right now. By calling 877691790. Easier that's 8776917900. Rates are variable may change any time. An analyst number 449250. Member FDIC. John the kids these days they don't work at all well or do today. Stay still though this is and let's be honest they still don't ask. Yeah Abbott wrote. Lee speaking in don't you like that term relatively speaking summer youth unemployment is at its lowest level since 1969. Between for people between sixteen and 249. Point 6% are unemployed which sounds like a lot it is more than double the overall population. But it's down from eleven and a half percent last year and it's the lowest rate in 48 years but the downside of that is the same thing. Everybody raises we talked about how phony the overall unemployment participation rate. Yeah if you gonna sit at home and play video games and you don't want to get a job you don't count. I I can't account those people. In this have actually pulled up to the the employment to population ratio which is a little different from the the total participation rate but the important population ratio for age sixteen to nineteen and sixteen to 24 okay. For sixteen to nineteen. If you go from 1950. To 2000 is about fifty to 55% and okay right fifty to 55% of people in that range were employed during the summer. Today it's down below 30% while that is unbelievable now and it's not like sixteen year old while retiring noted and cashing in on days they have an Giles or they have been working through the single bright years you know it's not like even now on the farm slogging away when their eight so. The question is what are they doing well some of them are going to things you know camps in blue and stuff like that where there you know continue their education through the summer that no problem. But you do want them just guys around who says no one would that would once I would do something nice we'll know. You've got to get to work courts and skills is a tell you if you don't start learning the skills to be in the workforce when you're that age. That's how you end up coming in age 22 with your mom interviewing for absolutely you know it's not even just the skills. Is the discipline of waking up in the morning and going to work right thing I don't like you doing this but I got to show up anyways I got to do I'm gonna do well I'm gonna make some money to think that it. There's no one in the history of the world that is woken up every day and said can't wait to get to work now if we defaulted there's always one of those that. You have one of those things every now and we just like. This was going to be tough but you show up you strap it on and you go out you go do and that's the most important lesson for sixteen to twenty we rules to learn. It's even more important and basically the learning a skill is the idea of going on trying to make something of your life. In what you're saying is before we even talk about the unemployment rate. Less than half as many people are to right like that's a problem. That's a product. And understand the people want to you know do things to continue their education in the summer and so forth. Well there's different kinds of education is the kind you get from studying different topics but there's also the kind that you get from learning what you can and can't do there's there's the kind you get. From warning how to talk to customers from morning how to talk to vendors that you deal with you have to warn those skills and you don't warn them in school. So I get this right now chuck we connect the dots here. 101000 people every day turn 65 yes we know there's a demographic crisis which is a whole lot of people are getting older at the same time. Fast at the same time. There are being replaced as 101000 each day turn 65 by generation of people only 30% of whom. Have an interest in working. Problem. And I'm I'm not connecting the dots here oh and by the way we're crackdown on immigration. Legal and otherwise where we unify and our workers so here on the robot people here don't wanna work or are retiring. And we're gonna block I'm gonna be a robot and if it. And on that cheerful note yeah it it's. Again like it there are some real problems that are coming down the road the next fifteen to twenty years in terms trying to figure this out maybe this is a good time to actually get robots. I I don't know maybe we've done maybe we just go to Bernie Sanders route give free calls everyone let's let's just let's just give up and do that at this point right. Yeah robots to the rescue robots to the rescue free college for every one. Started when he went nuts what were not doing that. It's crazy. Let's talk a little bit about what is going on over in Europe right now okay. Even though we touched on your little bit earlier that they are growing a little bit more than they had previously. Jobs still are coming back yet. And and an issue there is that sort of secular problem which she talked about with the youth. If they have a problem there with the overall workforce which is that. Nearly half of the people who don't have jobs have been without a job. For at least a year. That those kind of numbers shock that we saw here back in 2009. When we just didn't have jobs and only 13% of the people in our country who don't have a job. Have not worked for over a year so long term unemployment come down along. We've made great progress if you wanna work we're finding work for you to hear our country Europe is behind us. In they have a still they've ever a lingering long term unemployment problem even though their overall rate is coming down. Yet it is it's still is a a a problem and in particular. You know we're talking about all of Europe here there's still some countries in Europe you look at what's going on agrees to sign we've got north of 20% unemployment. There are real structural issues that are just not going to be resolved any time soon and in other countries including those countries there continues to be very large mismatch between the skills that employers seeking. And the skills that workers have that's a continent wide problem there it's a problem here it's something we've got to address. 100% is let's take a little bit of a break when we come back we're gonna have trivia so make sure you stick around see get a chance to win some free stuff. They say video pads ten pounds. But don't tell Barry in charge the financial exchanges alive every day on FaceBook and YouTube this is the financial exchange radio network. What's a little bit attribute John as it sounds. We're doing trivia today based on target and the reason for that is the target reported their earnings before the bell today and so if you know the right answer. Texas at 68680. Were given away we're we're all done given away the other passes to the dealt technologies championship we've given all those away. So if you want to go seasoned golf you can't do that what we can't give you is 25 dollar gas card if you get the right answer we have to get before anyone else at Texas 6680. If you know the right answer. Let's do. Okay here real how many target stores. Are there in the United States Texas it's 68680. You can use Google if you want to but you'll be slower than everyone else that Texas at 68680. How many target stores are there in the United States if the first person with the right answer to negative 25 dollar gas card of your choosing. Let's go talk a little bit more about the the US dollar here and specifically manufacturing in the US US dollars down about 10% over the course of the year. Making manufacturing much more competitive inside the night. States and we dug in fact it's been a a great boost the US economy it's been a headwind that we had for the last a few years as the rest of the world struggled. And the US did much better as the rest of the world but we've talked about her in fact the Standard and companies that have happened earnings are more outside the United States. They've seen earning the rocket up 14%. And those companies that are mostly domestic oriented that had more like 68% increases. I hear today so. There's been a nice. Oh win here it's helped the United States economy alive. We've heard the president even talk about although you know he supports a strong dollar longer term their big benefits to getting that of a break with the and easing dollar against some of these other currencies where we might have overshot last few years. Giant attend the interviews one of the smarter investors than China local thank you do you understand currencies on how they've lake. Would you ever place any bet on currency. The problem I have with that is all they. The note the numbers that we look at like on the strength of the economy inflation outlook. The stability. The national defense they all these factors although in two. A stab pushing the value of the currency the problem is everything you and I know chuck. Is already known by the rest of the world so when we say. All the US is getting a strong president while everybody already knew that there are due to its fully discounted like in seconds. So caused by the time we see it on the Wall Street Journal. It a Smart money's guardian because currency markets we talked to this earlier. They're much bigger than the stock markets this is where the big wealth of the world is largely invested. These people are really Smart in the discount. Anything positive or negative a relative to a the intrinsic value of a nation. And subsequently its currency paid they they discounted immediately so whatever we know is old news. Let's talk a little bit about this this on court deal from from Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway going up against Elliott management. Trying to buy this company what's the latest that we're seeing here. This was saying here is you know both would like it Greg gable who's considered by many people will be the possible successor to Warren Buffett running Berkshire Hathaway. Berkshire energy is growing and they see an opportunity here in this company called energy futures holdings. Which is part of on court on course name of the company. Berkshire made in nine billion dollar offer to buy this company which has been flirting with bankruptcy and actually isn't bankruptcy. In Texas. But the management which is a hedge fund. They also want to buy it there willing to pay more. And to get an Ian. Elegant apparently bought a large block of debt from fidelity. And they're gonna take that debt to vote against Berkshire's proposal to geeky stuff but. Its engines the only battle in the world defiance Pickens of buying this company. I think Berkshire has and you never never bet against Warren Buffett do you don't in you know appoints Barry Armstrong made so. Oppression is that when you're dealing with utilities. It's very important that the regulators and the people who licensees utilities. They picked solid. Financial companies you don't want the source of your energy. Going out of business and others deserve it's it's a pretty important basics what is the reason why we have regulated utilities and the reason is if you don't people died when those qualities can't provide power like it's it's it's pretty base. So to Berkshire has that itch they can be and they say look we have more money than anybody that we are you know Fort Knox of capital. We would like to purchase your company. And we will provide you something that is sleep at night which is you know we are never going out of business where the company won't win the world comes to an end. Everybody calls us to to get bailed out right Bank of America called us the US government called assistant to help on Goldman's stacked General Electric you know I mean. So that they'll be a great slogan for Berkshire Hathaway actually were the bank for the banks have to. OP senate Buffett as insider deals that what I'd like to point out to them is. He is now sitting on 100 billion dollars in cash you guys elephant gun out again. Is prepared. But but the point is but he's got to fund the deal and he's accepting virtually nothing for the hundred billion dollars in so when and if we end up in big trouble. Warren Buffett sitting in a hundred billion dollars to bail people out at great. Immediate expense to him I should put a financial lesson for the individual. And before you get greedy consider this. And as a Berkshire shareholder I find interest Berkshire's sitting right now on two dollars of cash. For a little bit under three dollars of all the stock it owns. Pretty soon they're they're about 40% in cash now again that's not counting their fully owned subsidiaries which is the largest turnout is the stock portfolio they're about 40% in cash for. Relic welded and a lot of bonds stood up so if you count the short term bonds and cash it's very very yeah bearish. It's just something that kind of euthanized on the. Watched let's talk a little bit about our friends at insure a match they exist to make sure that your assets are protected. If you're like many of our listeners who own a home and or one or two cars. State police helicopter has collision with large drone over awards. I am concerned about these drones stopped buying drove it. But no one needs drones. If you called them by their real name there remote control helicopters and no one sounds cool when you called that but everyone calls the drones on it and roll them on its loss. It's a remote control helicopter. Look the day nerds that the danger here cannot be overstated. And know what we saw your state police helicopter. You know almost had a collision old with a large drone over Lawrence. At the pilot had to make hard left to make sure he didn't hit it. Amid the rule is you can't fly above 400 feet you can't fly within five miles of airport but people don't comply with that I'll tell there was 600 feet yeah. And go 120 miles an hour. Which by the way that's rather impressive that the helicopter was moving that fast yeah that's true if they edit the media the you know yes it's Hologic to gives lights on. Possibly a problem but knows I mean these drones are our potential real problem. I am naive as I recall I think we need to have. We we need to get reduce some of these rooms. You know there in the hands of a lot of people. And when I was a ME. Pilot's license the flight that landed right in and don't get me wrong I don't know have you view watched. The world racing is on ESP you know I've heard about it though. So I was skeptical at first. It's cool that I deputies. Cooled pose a cool. Or fly these 00 you're not watching the door on what's in the draw watching the droll torture kind of in the background which is great okay and our liners that part of that is funny they don't use their real names they use like their screen names my name suits like. Billy Bob. Garrido. Being liked Jimmy XXX. There anyway. Like wild wings 85. When we had a malfunction on the third engine and that's why we crashed in the butt. I'll tell you the actual drone racing and they've got cameras on these things so it's like you actually like flying through the air on your big TV. These things are movies like 4050 miles an extra line like it is. Awesome some like he has been three years on the Ochoa. As you chose it's I believe it's obvious paean to a decent it's the other product Sundays at 6 am is known as it is. Time it was like 6 PM on weekday early yet and it's it's the DRO drawn increasingly. Read I I doubt they have like a source take show him on the drones and I that's about it if they. Drone race cities to a look I it's a huge drone racing I get eats its NASCAR for the the next and third generation. Or what it is well if you look but I don't want them flying around yeah our guys if it's regulated and controlled and under controlled environment fine I just don't like everybody line these things around don't they're they're very dangerous animals problems these all these ideas like oh we can get our packages delivered by drones who injured. I don't want all those drones flying around like blocking out this guy's like I kinda like the fact that if I look up. It's either border plane it's not Superman how to drone it's a bird or plane and what the drone coming on my deck. It's just it's creepy as fragile craps going to broken drones you know to write off. I go here's your team made it shattered there you know you're gonna hit like a tree every once in one. Power lines or lines birds. I just I don't know it's you know right now it's you sit there and say OK you know where your package you tracking. Office and that that drone is out there and you'll like will be dropped somewhere between Hollis in an Ashland but we're not quite sure. Don't look in the forest sport it'll be out there somewhere or you go on lots of ups if you're a power aligning Quincy I guess the market because I think they've. I think we need to have upon the break moment on the drones it's it's just it's. It's a little speaking about lost packages via the TV there chuck arguing this that yes this is juiciest we're we're getting a of re delivery on Monday so we're attempting to while happy new delivery on Monday. And it's where it goes so that's that's the latest update the TV is scheduled for delivery on Monday. And hopefully he opening its duty time percent discount at 10% discount for the team's top level taken it was it was already discounted price and so it ended up being a little bit more but I will take it. Let's do a little bit of a break right now and we come back. Talk about what one pharmacy is doing to try to limit the use of oak yours that's coming up from our insurer mats dot com studios. From doctors this is finishing at the American Medical Association. They they believe that they should be left up to the doctors and their patients. And you know I think they appreciate the fact that they're trying to reduce the number of people who. Develop issues related to opiate addiction. But the point is that. OP does do serve very important additional purpose they do help lots of people. In this is a really difficult case that we've talked about before chuck we're so many people are helped and so many people are hurt. Yeah and what Express Scripts is trying to do is they they're testing a pilot program. Where new open your users are limited to a seven day prescription even if are they they need longer ones really. It also requires them to use short acting drugs rather than long acting OP Lloyds and also limit dosage. And also they are trying to monitor for pill shopping more people go from doctor doctor just looking for additional pills. I understand why doctors feel that they are kind of being you know. Run around and. And circumvented on this but. OP which are huge problem yet this is the greater the greater interest in the in in the community. It it there are conflicting issues here. Express Scripts is trying to limit OP notes. Doctors simply saying don't go too far here because there are some people who do get help. It's a very difficult situation it is because there are some you know with certain surgeries in this that you you need some kind of of pain relief just because of how painful it can be and like you know John Smith takes a huddle I know John Smith will get. Addicted to right. You know he'll get help. But he also get hurt and it's a case where we know that OP Lloyds are all bad we know that right they are useful in some situations. It's how we work to make sure that those the situations that we use the man and then how we follow up with patients to make sure they don't fall into a pattern of dependence. Very difficult via and so what this is an ongoing debate but expressed concern Express Scripts. Limiting OP codes and doctors are concerned that let's let's talk about the top ten states in which to raise. A baby this is an article coming from CNBC with. Data from wall. The number one state to raise a baby in Vermont. But it gets better. Of the top ten states in the country to raise a baby. Do we all of us four of them Vermont New Hampshire Connecticut and Massachusetts. Dana Ronaldo left out. I didn't see where they were but they're not on the top technology called bottom. Then in the public Tucker Richard Neer in order to get those Jimenez again. But you have Connecticut and Massachusetts and either side that kind of good vibe is probably gonna do you know. Where and in these states ranked highly for different reasons Vermont scored high on all fronts with the whirlwind your mortality rate lot of pediatricians. And also a lot of very good care Massachusetts very expensive care. But one of the lowest infant mortality rates OK in New Hampshire. Scored second. For having low hospitals to Syrian delivery charges actually John Maine comes in a percent. Many commits a minute ago there were I was the only one left out. And main scored third for having the most midwives in OBG Williams per capita Rollins got to be like eleven I would imagine right. It's it's got to be just out of the top ten right I mean it's just surrounded by so many wonderful places to have a baby. I can't imagine it can't be that war you think it's like top fifteen for Rhode Island of an ample data right now. But New Hampshire a little direct from Walt clubs say ago lets the mean is seventh ruled island. When I was thirteen and go rounds every state in New England is in the top third grade of states to have a baby the worst state to have a baby. Mississippi mrs. I was gonna say that Mississippi at number two Florida Louisiana. Florida is the seventh were state to have pops over to host West Virginia is down there on the list Nevada is pretty bad. South Carolina is not appear very good. The northeast is very strong on New York is not great problems it looks like it's a very expensive in New York. And parts of the midwest very good as well Minnesota North Dakota. Iowa also a pile on the list but New England it was that big. Happy baby making we got the top top four of the top ten wonderful bears are still got a jab and so now that's all the time that we have for today chucked out of John Bowie and Tucker still the signing off from our insurer match dot com studios.
