POTUS' Executive Order to defend police NOT defund police

President Trump made his announcement regarding his new Executive Order today from the White House's Rose Garden. His Executive Order comes at a time when the country is calling out for police reform in the wake of the death of George Floyd and now Rayshard Brooks, both which occurred in the last couple weeks. The goal of the Executive Order is to "foster closer ties between law enforcement and the communities they serve". Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany says that "under the President's leadership, the Trump administration is turning justified anger into meaningful action to ensure a fair justice system for all Americans."

President Trump's Executive Order changes include the following:

  • Stricter Use of Force Standards
  • Creates a database to track officers accused of misconduct--information sharing
  • Bans choke holds unless an officer's life is at risk
  • Defends police NOT defunds police departments

Pros of the Executive Order:

  • Promotes Accountability
  • Promotes best practices for law enforcement across the country
  • Takes action to "deliver a future of safety and security for Americans of every race, religion, color, and creed"

From what you've heard about President Trump's Executive Order, are you satisfied with it? I agree with all these changes in policing. I think it's beneficial to have a database documenting incidents that police have because you should be keeping track of that across multiple department platforms to avoid any type of police brutality such as was the case with George Floyd. Officer Chauvin had a history and had his department known or kept track of that more, maybe he would not have been in that position which ultimately lead to George Floyd's death. Additionally, it's for the best we ban choke holds. No good comes of that and the only time it's appropriate is when an officer's life is in danger and he's being attacked. Otherwise that should not be the way officer's restrain someone. Furthermore I'm glad the President is not for defunding police because police need more training, technological updates that assist in making information sharing accessible across nationwide police departments, as well as education. What makes those things possible? Money and funding. To defund the police would NOT help the problem, it would hurt the problem. Unfortunately you need money to make big changes so if you take away the money, you're not taking away the problems, you're staying stagnant.
