NYPD holds press conference regarding truck attack in lower Manhattan

      The NYPD help a news conference following a vicious attack in lower Manhattan today. Details from the press conference are listed at the bottom of this post, but here is what we know now. 

       A man in a Home Depot pickup/box truck killed 6 people and injured others after driving the wrong way down the West Side bike path in lowel Manhattan at about 3:15 this afternoon. The suspect shouted "Allahu Akbar" as he exited the vehicle with fake firearms. Witnesses reported hearing four to six gunshots. Counter-terror police were on the scene quickly and searched the truck for explosives.

ABC News is reporting 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov from Tampa FL is suspect in NYC attack.

NYPD Press Conference details:

  • Mayor Bill de Blasio: "This was an act of terror"  
  • New York Gov. Cuomo says vehicle driving on bike path was 'lone wolf' attack; no evidence it was part of wider plot.
  • 3:05pm: male driving rented home depot truck drove southbound striking pedestrians, then collided with school bus injuring others. After collision, suspect brandished pellet and paintball gun after exiting vehicle. NYPD officer immediately confronted individual and shot suspect. 
  • 8 dead, 11 people transported to area hospitals with serious injuries; others may be injured. 
  • Police state suspect is 29 year old male and was transported to hospital with gunshot wound to abdomen
  • Suspect did make statement after exiting vehicle that pointed to terrorism
  • Heavy police presence will be felt in New York City
