Harassment, intimidation, and fondling. These are the accusations against the man that was supposed to be "the next Obama."

The former Democratic Congressman Harold Ford Jr. has been terminated by Morgan Stanley for (allegedly) sexually harassing fellow employees. An anonymous woman spoke to the Huffington Post about what was supposed to be a professional relationship with Ford. She apparently met him through Morgan Stanley in a professional capacity, but the professionalism changed after a night out with the former politician. The accuser claims Harold Ford Jr. intimidated her following significant harassment, and then forced himself on her. She accuses Ford of grabbing her inappropriately, and significantly enough to the point she had to seek assistance from a security guard in the building.

Ford apparently didn't allow that event to dissuade him from continuing his predatory behavior. He then carpet bombed her with emails in an attempt to solicit her for drinks. She continually pleaded for him to stop, even reminding him of his harassment hoping that he would reconsider his behavior. He responded in an email with the following quote.

“Hey very sorry. Meant no harm, and I apologize for whatever I may have said or what was said. And my overtures are strictly professional. Again I apologize didn’t mean to be inappropriate at all. Sorry that impression was left.” -Harold Ford Jr. email to his accuser (Huffington Post)

The victim apparently confided in a few individuals, one of which she communicated with the night of the original incident. The friend reported that she was frightened by the event, but was concerned about the possible consequences that could come if reported. Ford has since denied the allegations to the Huffington Post.

“This simply did not happen. I have never forcibly grabbed any woman or man in my life. Having drinks and dinner for work is part of my job, and all of my outreach to the news reporter making these false allegations was professional and at the direction of my firm for business purposes. I support and have tremendous respect for the brave women now speaking out in this important national dialogue. False claims like this undermine the real silence breakers. I will now be bringing legal action against the reporter who has made these false claims about me as well as Morgan Stanley for improper termination.” - Harold Ford Jr.

It should be celebrated that Morgan Stanley handled this situation swiftly. With politicians able to control their own fate, and celebrity figures able to still wield their power, at least the private sector is able to quickly act on allegations. The only concern (although many allegations seem legitimate) is that we are creating a world that relies on trial by internet. So long "innocent until proven guilty."
