Confirmation has been released by the Pentagon confirming a fourth death attributed to Wednesdays ambush of a joint US and Nigerian patrol.

A squad of up to 12 US soldiers assisted Nigerian soldiers on a patrol near Niger's border with Mali. The patrol came under attack by 50 enemy combatants linked to an Islamic extremist group, although it's unclear exactly which group perpetrated the strike. Originally it was 3 soldiers reportedly deceased, Staff Sgt. Bryan Black, 35, Staff Sgt. Jeremiah Johnson, 39, and Staff Sgt. Dustin Wright, 29. All of the fallen heroes served with the 3rd Special Forces Group based at Fort Bragg in  North Carolina.

A fourth soldier was assumed to be missing, causing added US forces to assist in a search. The combined forces were able to locate the missing soldier who was also found deceased. Two other soldiers were wounded in the incident. Nigerien news outlets have reported that four Nigerien soldiers were killed in the attack as well, possibly bringing the death toll to eight.
