In a post game press conference, Cam Newton was taking questions from reporters. And one of his answers has made waves in a way that the Carolina Panthers were not expecting.

Charlotte Observer reporter Jourdan Rodrigue, a regular reporter in the Panthers locker room, asked Cam Newton a question about some of the routes ran by wide receiver Devin Funchess. His response was “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes."

According to witnesses in the room of about 30 reporters, the room fell silent in response, to which Newton then replied "It's funny."

Conflicting stories of an encounter between the two afterwards made the exhange even more interesting. Carolina spokesman Steven Drummond insists that in speaking privately afterward, Newton expressed regrets for his remarks. But a statement released by Rodrigue painted a different picture. "I was dismayed by his response, which not only belittled me but countless other women before me and beside me who work in similar jobs. I sought Mr. Newton out as he left the locker room a few minutes later. He did not apologize for his comments."

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy added that his remarks "are just plain wrong and disrespectful to the exceptional female reporters and all journalists who cover our league. They do not reflect the thinking of the league."
