Where Did Warren/Obama Get the Socialist Rant?

Reposting by popular demand.

The folks at Legal Insurrection have found the source of the socialist, anti-American rant that Elizabeth Warren launched into the public sphere last year and that President Obama is now pretending he never repeated. It's from a Berkeley professor (big surprise there!) named George Lakoff.

Nobody makes a dollar in this country in business without using the common wealth…. The idea that there’s a self-made man, that’s there’s a self-made millionaire is false, it is absolutely false...

Lakoff writes:

There are no self-made men! The wealthy have gotten rich using what previous taxpayers have paid for. They owe the taxpayers of this country a great deal and should be paying it back.

It amazes me that no one notices that Lakoff's point - as repeated by the geniuses Warren and Obama - is illogical. I like to use the analogy of a foot race. Everyone running shares the same track, benefits from the judges, the starting gun and the timer. Does that mean that no one wins the race on his own? Does that mean that the guy who comes in first owes some extra payment to the race organizers? Didn't he cover that obligation with his entry fee?

The other interesting thing is that Lakoff's point runs counter to Obama's tax the rich hate speech. He's looking to change the tax system, which has always forced workers of all levels to contribute to the common wealth, to one in which the rich carry the whole burden. What moral right do those of us in the middle class have to the infrastructure if we don't contribute?

Some people are still confused about whether Barack was suggesting a penalty for the rich - the context provided by George Lakoff and Liz Warren, both of whom say that you owe something extra for having won the gold medal, fills in the blanks in President Obama's disjointed remarks.
