What's Goin' On?

It's hard to know where things are at on Castro Care.

With the abortion issue still unresolved and House Democrats seemingly just short of votes to pass their bill, President Obama arrived at the Capitol just after 3:30 Saturday to speak to the entire membership of the House Democratic caucus and implore them to unite behind the issue that has become the signature effort of his presidency.
As of 9:30pm Saturday night, there's floor debate on C-Span - GOP members talking to an empty chamber.
Earlier in the day, House Democratic leaders walked away from plans to deem the Senate's health care bill to have passed the House without ever taking an up-or-down vote on it. Brendan Daly, a spokesman for Speaker Nancy Pelosi, said the House would vote separately on the Senate bill. The idea had come under withering assault from Republicans and some Democrats.
It's not clear if the Dems are working on an Executive Order that might take of concerns of pro-life Democrats led by Bart Stupak - he reportedly has a half dozen votes that will vote against the bill without further protections for the unborn.
“I don’t know if it’s enough,” Stupak said of those now backing him in demanding stricter language preventing public funding of abortion. “There’s rumors going back and forth. Last I heard they were short four and that was about an hour ago." (this was written at 4:30pm)
Pelosi did lose a couple of votes today.
Holding to form, Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah, announced Saturday that he would oppose his party's health reform bill, just like he did when the House version came up for a vote late last year. U.S. Rep. Zack Space, D-Dover, announced today that he will vote against the health care reform bill being considered in Congress. A vote is planned in the House on Sunday.
It seems that Dems are within a few votes of closing this out - and there may be hidden yes votes that Pelosi's been holding back that allow them to know that they've already gotten there. The vote is scheduled for late Sunday, with debate and procedural decisions running through the afternoon following a 2pm start.
