Sorry For the Apology

A really dumb Republican apologized to BP today for the $20 billion shakedown at the hands of the Obama administration.

A leading House Republican accused the White House Thursday of a "$20 billion shakedown" by requiring BP to establish a huge fund to compensate those hurt by the Gulf Coast oil spill. Rep. Joe Barton of Texas spoke at the start of a House hearing where Hayward appeared for the first time before Congress.
Joe Barton has now apologized, sort of, for his apology. Why? The Democrats are trying to shift the heat for failed leadership onto the GOP for being sold out to Big Oil.
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs responded: "What is shameful is that Joe Barton seems to have more concern for big corporations that caused this disaster than the fishermen, small business owners and communities whose lives have been devastated by the destruction."
The Washington Post reports that the apology apology was forced.
According to a GOP leadership aide, Barton met with House Minority Leader John Boehner (Ohio) and Minority Whip Eric Cantor (Va.) Thursday afternoon, and was told, "Apologize, immediately. Or you will lose your [subcommittee] position, immediately. Now that he has apologized, we'll see what happens going forward."
