Playing Center, President Visits Lincoln Memorial
Positioning himself for the seduction of independent voters, the president surprised visitors to the Lincoln Memorial yesterday in a celebration of a government that's still running - and of compromise.
Mr. Obama began his remarks Friday night by remarking on how the Washington Monument, visible behind him, would have been shuttered if the White House and Congress had not reached a deal.
Hours later, on Saturday he climbed the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to shake hands with tourists.
“I just wanted to say, real quick, that because Congress was able to settle its differences, that’s why this place is open today and everybody’s able to enjoy their visit,” he said. “And that’s the kind of future cooperation I hope we have going forward. Because this is what America is all about: Everybody from different places enjoying those things that bind us together.”
“It is wonderful to spend time with you guys, I hope you have a great time,” Mr. Obama added.
Great leadership is such an inspiring thing.
