Obama: Social Programs Make us Great
One of the more disgusting parts of the presidential demagoguery of yesterday's speech was this portion:
“We are a better country because of these commitments,’’ he said in an impassioned defense of Medicaid and Medicare against Republicans’ push for sweeping changes. “I’ll go further — we would not be a great country without those commitments.’’
Our greatness as a country comes from the creativity and vibrance unleashed by our constitutionally guaranteed liberties. The social programs to which the president refers are crushing that liberty under the weight of debt. To boil this down to a compassion argument is disingenuous and destructive to the efforts of those who are attempting to face up to the problem.
