Newt's the New Number Two
New polls shows that Newt is the new hot thing in the Republican presidential race. One survey shows Newt tied for second with Mitt Romney...
A CBS News poll shows Mr. Romney’s support slipping to 15%, putting him even with Mr. Gingrich and behind Mr. Cain, at 18%.The poll of likely Republican primary voters shows 61% dismissed the sexual harassment allegations against Mr. Cain, while 30% say they would be less likely to back him.
A McLatchy-Marist poll also shows Newt in second.
Gingrich won the support of 19 percent of those surveyed. He is just 4 points behind Romney’s 23 percent and ahead of Herman Cain’s 17 percent. Ron Paul rounds out the candidates in double digits with 10 percent of the vote.
The McLatchy numbers show how fluid the GOP nominating race still is.
Just 30 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents said they strongly support their choice, while another 28 percent said they could still vote differently. Another 42 percent say they somewhat support their candidate, suggesting that there is room for maneuvering. But Newt voters like Newt. Gingrich voters, however, are more committed than supporters of Romney or Cain. Fully 43 percent of his supporters say they strongly support the former speaker, compared to just 31 percent for Cain and 30 percent for Romney.
Herman Cain's campaign has begun its decline.
