Another nice ad from the Republicans, highlighting the challenging record of Obama friend, and Illinois senate hopeful, Alexi Giannoulias.
President Obama went to bat today for his old basketball friend from Chicago, Alexi Giannoulias, who is running for his old Senate seat in Illinois.
By pitching in, President Obama’s own political capital is on the line in an election that is neck-and-neck between Giannoulias and his Republican opponent, Rep. Mark Kirk. About 400 people turned out for the $1,000 to $2,400-a-plate fundraiser, which gives a big boost to Giannoulias, whose opponent has nearly four times as much money in his campaign war chest.
Dems are getting ready to file suit, meanwhile, to win the right for current seat holder Roland Burris to run to serve an extra few weeks in the seat during the lame duck portion of the term after the fall elections. A court recently ordered that a special election be held, but said only the major party candidates for the full-term could run for the interim term.
That decision would make Democratic state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias and Republican Rep. Mark Kirk the major-party candidates in a special. But Burris wants the option of running for the seat himself, in order to serve an additional few weeks in his appointed office.
If Burris could fill those final weeks, he'd be positioned to help pass more radical legislation for the White House that Americans don't want before power gets more balanced next year.
