Boehner was chosen in a vote by the full 435-member House, shortly after the Republican-led chamber convened, ending four years of Democratic rule.
Rep. John Boehner of Ohio was elected speaker of the House of Representatives as the 112th Congress officially convened Wednesday, realizing Republican gains from the November elections that gave the party a more powerful voice in Washington.
In a sonorous roll-call vote, Boehner defeated outgoing Speaker Nancy Pelosi, (D-San Francisco), 241 to 173.
