With emissions of nothing more than water vapor, hydrogen fuel cells eliminate carbon fuels altogether. That is, they eliminate them from the vehicle. Instead, the debate over the types of energy used to generate hydrogen shifts from GM and other carmakers to the natural resources and power industries.
The new Chevy Volt, an electric car with a little engine to recharge the battery, continues to sell poorly despite a nearly $8,000 government incentive.
GM sold 321 of the new plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in January and 281 in February. The numbers were released shortly after GM announced plans to make the Volt available nationwide by the end of the year.
