Food Supply: Down on Pink
Pink Slime is back in the news - thanks to food entertainer/activist Jamie Oliver. McDonald's dropped it in January in response to consumer awareness caused by Oliver, I think. Here's a nice outline of what it is.
The key ingredient to the process is ammonia... so basically, we're taking a product that would be sold in the cheapest form for dogs and after this process we can give it to humans...
The pink slim cut ground beef is being used by the school lunch program.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), schools and school districts plan to buy the treated meat from Beef Products Inc. (BPI) for the national school-lunch program in coming months.
