Federal Workers to Retain Inflated Salaries
Federal Workers, who are said to make about twice what private sector workers earn in total remuneration, will get no raises for a while in a budget move the president says will save two billion dollars next year!
"The hard truth is getting this budget under control is going to require some broad sacrifice, and that sacrifice must be shared by employees of the federal government," he said.
Pretty harsh. Will federal workers hit the streets like we've seen in Europe?
"After all, small businesses and families are tightening their belts," added the president. "Their government should, too."
The White House stressed that the freeze was not meant to punish or disrespect federal workers, but merely to have them do their part to help address the budget deficit. "This is not just a line item on a federal ledger," Mr. Obama said. "These are people's lives." He said he "did not reach this decision easily."
Of course not.
Under the president's proposal, a federal worker promoted to a higher pay scale would still get a pay raise.
Tough measures for tough times.
