On Being Fired
I pity people who have never been fired; it’s such an edifying experience. It happened to me recently. I arrived for my shift, only to have the general manager of the restaurant whisk me away to his office. I soon learned that the night before I had said something to a VIP that I should not have said. I made a little joke, which, unfortunately for me, the VIP misinterpreted, perhaps willfully for all I know. And just like that I was gone. Perhaps, if I do well enough in life, it will someday be my sad duty to fire someone. But I sure as hell won’t hold him accountable for his bad jokes, of which every human being has his own repertoire.
