MBTA fare collection changes could be ahead

Wave good-bye to the cash option

November 20, 2017 - 10:10 am

The MBTA is planning to spend over 700-million-dollars on a state of the art new fare collection system.  The MBTA board today will consider a request to replace the CharlieCard system with an all-electronic, cashless system.  Officials believe the new system will reduce bus ride times by around ten percent.  The system is based on one used in London, and the MBTA hopes to have it in place by 2020.
