GQ magazine came out with a very controversial cover this week: Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick is GQ’s “Citizen of the Year.” Am I surprised? No.

Evidently being an America-hater pays. GQ described Kaepernick as the “man who became the movement.” It says: “But a simple act - kneeling during the national anthem - changed everything. It cost him his job. It also transformed Colin Kaepernick into a lightning rod and a powerful symbol of activism and resistance.”

Kaepernick protested the national anthem because he believes America oppresses black people, saying, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.” This is the same “activist” who idolizes Cuba’s late Communist dictator Fidel Castro, portrays police officers as “pigs,” and isn’t even registered to vote.

This isn’t the first time a magazine has had a controversial cover. Rolling Stone slapped the Boston Marathon bomber, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, on the front of the magazine. It seemed like Rolling Stone was glorifying a terrorist. The cover said, “The Bomber: How a popular, promising student was failed by his family, fell into radical Islam and became a monster.” Everyone was to blame except the terrorist himself.

Since many NFL players have participated in kneeling for the national anthem, fans have boycotted and not tuned into games. Just like the NFL has lost viewers, so will GQ magazine lose readers. There is a growing call for a boycott of GQ. Just hours after the release, #BoycottGQ was trending on Twitter. If you do buy this magazine, you should boycott. If you subscribe to GQ, you should cancel your subscription.

Placing Kaepernick on the cover of GQ as “Citizen of the Year” is a slap in the face to Americans, like the protests of the national anthem.

There are many others who should be “Citizen of the Year.” Someone like Houston Texan football star, JJ Watt. Watt raised over $37 million for Hurricane Harvey victims. Why wasn’t he considered for “Citizen of the Year?” Answer: He doesn’t hate his country or disrespect our soldiers.

Where Kaepernick has spent his money also tells us much about him. For example, he donated $25 thousand to “Assata’s Daughters”—an organization that honors Assata Shakur, a convicted cop-killer and another $25 thousand to “United We Dream,” which supports DACA. His money certainly didn’t go to Harvey victims. Instead, it went to left-wing causes. And that’s why GQ picked him to be on their cover.

Yet, “Moron of the Year” is a more fitting title for Kaepernick. After all, he did protest his way to unemployment. Now, that’s a magazine cover I’d support. Kaepernick being named “Citizen of the Year” is fake news. Do yourself a favor: save your money and boycott GQ. I know I am.
