Bring your own bag one step closer to reality in Boston

City Council unanimously approves the measure

November 30, 2017 - 7:17 am

The Boston City Council is sending a ban on single-use plastic shopping bags to Mayor Marty Walsh for his consideration.

The measure calls for a 5 cent fee to be charged for a thicker, compostable plastic bag or a paper bag with handles.  Paper bags without handles can still be offered for free under the measure, which also encourages people to try reusable grocery bags. Walsh has not said where he stands on the issue, but the Council has enough votes should the Mayor veto the ban.
