Saugus Police say a 16-year-old is in custody following an alleged break in at the Square One Mall in Saugus that prompted a significant law enforcement response.

A break-in alarm sounded at the Dick's Sporting Goods store inside the mall sometime around four o'clock Monday morning, officials said. Police saw a smashed window at the sporting goods store when they arrived and officers said the suspect was possibly armed with a gun.

A SWAT team, K-9 units and state police all converged on the scene. Officials believe the teenager broke into the store's gun rack and tried to get ammunition.

After an hours-long situation, police confirmed early in the afternoon that the teen had been arrested at his home in Everett.

"It is believed at this time the suspect escaped the building and we just got news that we have him in custody," said Saugus Police Chief Domenic DiMella. Police were still looking for the weapon they believe to have been stolen.

DiMella said the break-in plus the fact that weapons may have been stolen were what prompted what he called a "large-scale but measured response."

The teen has not been identified.
